San Angelo is a virtual oasis in the arid West Texas plains, with three lakes and the Concho River running through the heart of the city. Initially a small settlement across from the historic landmark of Fort Concho, the town now has a population of 100,000. The Concho River Walk has been designated one of the “Great Places in America” by the American Planning Association after the city revitalized the walk along the Concho River in 2004.
